i'm starting over with my site

it's that time of... uh. time. again. i felt like starting over with my neocities site. once again i'm telling myself that i'll keep it simple, right, that i'll only gradually allow it to become more complex, driven by the content of the site. sure. so for now the entire site is just this page. this webpage. we're doing webpages again, folks. we're not using frameworks and all that nonsense. we're doin html in this bitch. anwyway i just worked a lot and i'm tired but i wanted to update my neocities site.

this is something that i tell people to do a lot

having a personal website, that is. and it can be fun to challenge people to make something really technical and challenging, but really i want people to make simple websites like this one. or download templates or something. use a visual html editor, i don't care. just carve out a corner on the internet, plop your ass down in it, and blast out "i'm here!!! i exist!!! i am a part of this age and here's some stuff i like and maybe a gif probably!!!"

there are some really cool sites on here, too

i tell people about neocities being a place for simple websites, just html, css, and javascript if you want javascript. i tend to lean into the "don't overthink it, just make an html page!" aspect of this platform and this community. but dawg, there's some really cool shit on here, too. there's people on here who saw how limited neocities allegedly is and just said "aight bet" and popped off and some whole other shit. at the time of writing i'm a little zonked out mentally, but let this serve as a note to myself to reserve some space for linking to cool sites i find on here.

and that's the fun of it

browsing around on neocities sites is great, especially if you have memories of the pre-broadband internet and basically everything that existed before facebook, more or less. it's the beauty of the old internet in here, but it's also now, and it has html5 and webp and webm and whatnot. i just think it's neat, y'all

other stuff that i like and/or am thinkin about right now

college football

it's fall right now, and that means football season, and dude i am having so much fun following college football this season. i'm an indiana hoosier, so of course i'm excited, coming off the most insane program turnaround of all time & our first ever national championship win. but even outside of that... i've been watching as many college football games as i physically can, i'm talking ball with my friends as much as possible, we're breaking down our favorite plays and talking about absolute mid-off matchups like they're the most important shit ever. and i'm havin a blast with that.

thinkpad tinkering

my "daily driver" laptop is a thinkpad with a 12th gen i5 cpu that was abandoned to me by my first ever client at my job. i held onto it for like 2 years before being like "there's no way they give a shit about this thing... time to put linux on it." i did some distro-hopping. i think i started with ubuntu, but i didn't stay for long before i wanted to step outside that box. for a while i was using rocky linux, which is sort of a continuation of centos. that happened because i realized it was a decent destkop experience on what's otherwise an entirely server-focused situation. but i was running into too many issues stemming from that server focus. i eventually landed on linux mint with their cinnamon desktop environment. and i've really liked that.

currently, i'm playin around with a different thinkpad that was left here. this one is an old work laptop that my ex left behind. it was her old one for a while already while we were together. it's a t490s with an 8th gen i7 in it. at first i installed debian on it, thinking i would practice some homelab sysadmin shit on there. but then i realized it was still pretty decent at streaming video, and it's slimmer and lighter than the other thinkpad, so it might become my travel personal laptop when i'm traveling for work and just want to watch tv and movies in the hotel room at night. i installed linux mint on this one, too, but with xfce instead of cinnamon. i'm impressed with linux mint's straight-out-the-box configuration of xfce. they clearly put in the effort to make it look and feel similar to the default setup in their preferred cinnamon desktop. so now i'm testing out this laptop, trying different media sources to see if there's anything it really struggles with, and i've installed steam and i'm sure i'll find some things that surprisingly run well on this old hardware. if nothing else, it's capable of running old school runescape. which, when i'm traveling, a lot of the time i just wanna hop on runescape and get some stuff done in the evening. i might test if xbox cloud play works well on this, but at the same time, i can run that on my phone, and packing the backbone phone controller case thing is easier than packing a whole controller.

thanks for being here. i'll be back again soon. ~wharf
